A fan-made game concept combining LEGO Racers with elements from LEGO Island 2, featuring all classic LEGO Space themes from the 90s

Project Overview

This project aims to create a LEGO video game based on the classic LEGO Racers PC game, enhanced with elements from LEGO Island 2, and featuring all the iconic LEGO Space themes from the 1990s. The game will be developed as a modification/extension of the original LEGO Racers engine.

Guided Free-Build System

Our innovative building system combines the freedom of creative construction with the guidance of official LEGO instructions, creating the ultimate digital building experience.

1. The "Reference" Panel (Left 20%)

This isn't a locked "step-by-step" guide. It's an interactive viewer for the official instruction booklet.

  • The player can flip through the pages of the scanned instructions (Page 1 of 20, 2 of 20...)
  • Just like having the physical book open on their desk
  • The current page is displayed clearly - no forcing, no locking parts
  • Simple navigation controls to move between pages

2. The "Smart" Part Palette (The Game Changer)

This is where your genius idea comes in. The palette doesn't restrict parts.

  • Special "Suggested Parts" or "Next Parts" mode
  • Based on the current instruction page, the game highlights or adds a subtle glow around relevant bricks
  • Visual indicators show: "This page uses: 4x 2x4 Red Brick, 1x 2x2 Slope, 2x 1x2 Blue Plate"
  • Helps players find what they need without restricting their creativity

3. The Freedom

Our system accommodates all play styles:

  • Veteran Builders: Can work from memory, glancing at the manual only for complex sections
  • New Players: Can follow instructions meticulously with the "suggested parts" highlight
  • Creative Players: Can use instructions as inspiration then modify designs with their own flair
  • Mix & Match: Players can combine parts from different sets since the palette isn't locked down

Why This Approach is Perfect

Respects Player Agency

Doesn't treat the player like a child who must follow directions. It treats them like an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) who has a manual open next to their building plate.

Solves the "I Can't Find the Piece!" Problem

Eliminates the frustration of scanning a big pile of bricks for one specific piece. The "suggested parts" highlight makes building smooth and enjoyable.

Scalable Implementation

Doesn't require complex step-by-step logic for every set. Just associate instruction pages with part IDs for a helpful UI feature that works across all 350+ sets.

Fits the LEGO Vibe

Matches the creative, exploratory spirit of classic LEGO games. We provide the tools and inspiration, then get out of the way to let the player create.

Technical Implementation Overview

  • Instruction manual stored as high-quality PNG images with navigation system
  • JSON database mapping instruction pages to part IDs and quantities
  • Visual highlighting system for the part palette
  • Non-intrusive UI that doesn't interfere with creative building
  • Compatible with all planned Space themes and sets

Development Guide

This guide outlines the development process for our team to create the LEGO Spyrius Racing game.

Step 1: Engine Analysis

Reverse engineer the LEGO Racers game engine to understand its capabilities and limitations. Document the file formats for models, textures, and tracks.

Step 2: Asset Pipeline

Create a workflow for converting LEGO set instructions into 3D models. Develop tools to extract parts from existing LEGO Racers assets and create new ones.

Step 3: 3D Modeling

Model all LEGO parts from the collected sets. Ensure accuracy to real LEGO pieces while optimizing for game performance.

Step 4: Track Design

Design race tracks inspired by each Space theme. Create concept art and block out tracks before full implementation.

Step 5: Programming

Modify the LEGO Racers engine to support new features, including expanded creation tools and additional game modes.

Step 6: Testing

Conduct extensive testing of all game features, focusing on vehicle physics, track design, and multiplayer stability.
